Why are wagons so unpopular in the U.S?
Wagons in my opinion are better looking than sedans. They aren’t just for soccer moms you know, the BMW M5 touring is a wagon and it pushes 500 horsepower. Thanks to you people who hate wagons, German sport wagons are never exported to the U.S.

that’s just the was it is. personally i hate most wagons but i like hatchbacks. but i think the bmw wagons look ugly, i dunno why, but i just do.
Wagons were replaced by mini-vans in the 80s. Like it or not the vacuous wives of the American family decided that the vans were too uncool for them to be riding in so they replaced them with unnecessarily heavy and wasteful SUVs. Cultural opinions are funny that way.
There WAS a time back in the 70′s when wagons RULED. Never know, they may come back, but people follow trends, and SUV’s are the trend today. minivans are still going strong too. Just bought a new minivan last week.
I think, U.S. Need wagon, when they have a child or need big purpose vehicle; the rest choosing sedan or coupe. They love to show they personality, but only to few people; and that make them no need to choose wagon. Beside, wagon not always have intristing model, and power not always needed in many U.S. city where crowded road is daily menu except you travel out of the city.
I think a lot of it has to do with the cultural stigma associated with wagons: boring, dull family movers. That stigma seemed to have expanded to include the minivan. The fact that they could be stylish, perform just as well as their sedan counterparts, and were generally more practical doesn’t seem to matter. The cultural view seems to be that a wagon (and now minivan) was something your parents/grandparents drove, and who wants to drive the same thing your middle-aged/senior family members motored around in?
A caveat: this are not my personal opinions, simply observations from friends, family and what I’ve seen in the automotive press. I like wagons myself.
volvo, and subaru kept sales of wagons somewhat strong during the minivan and suv explosion and for sure a volvo with nice wheels and a tint job looks nice.
i had a subaru wagon and it was convient and handled well.
german cars like bmw are too expensive and vw’s had a hard time competing with the american market hooked on suv’s
i had a vw jetta and liked the trunk space but would have loved a wagon that was modern.
