This is not a simple question.

The cars could be geared differently – one could be faster 0 – 60 mph while the other could be better at 40 – 70 mph.

One car could, and probably does, weigh more. I have seen several drag races where the more aerodynamic car eats the square box the last 150 yards as speeds approach / exceed 100 mph.

Autocross cars are geared short so they are world beaters from 0 to 45 mph. My 1972 BMW 2002tii with a slightly detuned formula 2 motor could destroy a Datsun 240 Z, or 280 Z at Autocross. Out on the highway my light weight 2 door square box just ran out of steam over 90 mph…. now ask me who had more fun driving and where can you go over 90 anywhere on the east coast ??

M5′s are heavier, its a power to weight ratio thing

The M5 accelerates quicker to 60mph by 0.2 seconds. and has a higher top speed by 10mph, but both are limited to 155mph.
But the M3 is much lighter and handles much better and has a better weight distribution.
On a race track, the M3 would kill the M5.

Yes this is true. Simply because the BMW M3 weighs a lot less.

M5 is a beast compared to m3. You get what you pay for kid.
