E39 M5 Specifications
General specification of the E39 M5 lists its country of origin as Germany. In 1997, one prototype was manufactured by BMW GmbH. This was followed with the production of 678 cars in 1998 and 5,425 cars in 1999. The company continued producing and enhancing its E39 M5 model until 2003.
In total, there were 22,482 units produced.
The configuration of its engine is 90º S62 V8. This is located in front and is longitudinally mounted. It displaces 4.941 liters which is equal to 301.5 cubic inches. Its stroke or bore is 94 mm per cylinder over 89 mm. The car has four valves and its fuel feed is via the Bosch MSS 52 fuel injection. The engine of the E39 M5 is naturally aspirated – which is one of the reasons people love it so much: REAL horsepower.
The vehicle weighs 1320 kilos and has a length of 4784 mm, width of 1800 mm and height of 1432 mm. It also has a wheel base of 2830 mm and track of 1515 mm. In its basic structure and suspension systems, the E39 M5 is based solidly on the 540i 6-Speed.
This means it has a strong and rigid body structure due to its aluminum suspension with double-pivot strut front and multi-link rear and ventilated disc brakes all around. The aluminum suspension system reduced the unsprung weight greatly, and is a pivotal element in the E39 M5’s innovative combination of handling prowess and riding comfort.
There were later three versions of the car, the European Left and Right Hand Drive versions and the North American version. These models have 4.9 liter eight-cylinder engine producing 400 horsepower for the Euro Spec and 394 for US models. The response time of the engine was greatly improved though the incorporation of Double E39 M5 VANOS technology and the use of a two stage “sport” button, which advanced throttle timing and reduced the power assist on the recirculating power steering.
Throughout its five year production, the E39 received few aesthetic and mechanical enhancements as it really was such a solid car right out of the box.
During this time, numerous engine sizes and configurations had also been made available to the market for the rest of the 5-series. The North American car enthusiasts saw the 525i, 528i, 530i, 540i and M5 models. And the European range was more diverse, with BMW offering the 520i, 523i, 528i, 530i, 535i, 540i, 525tds, 520d, 525d, 530d and M5 designs.
Traditional features for the BMW e39 m5 were; a twenty-five percent maximum locking limited slip differential, a six-speed manual Getrag Type D gearbox and a reinforced clutch. The /// M Motorsport department later modified the suspension, thus reducing the spring height by applying thicker anti-roll bars. Other improvements provided for a stiffer ride for the occupants but less body-roll for the vehicle as it negotiate corners. Large ventilated disc brakes on all four corners also allowed excellent stopping power. In later models, the recirculating-ball steering system was further improved by lowering its overall steering ratio that resulted in a quicker response times.
The E39 M5 sedan design has proven that quality is timeless. From acceleration to handling, braking, response, transmission, wheels, luxury and other features- the car gets excellent reviews.
The performance figures of the E39 M5 is well known among car aficionados. The 400 bhp/ 298KW @6600 rpm power and torque measured at 500 Nm/369 ft lbs. @ 3800 rpm, were record breaking numbers at the time of the car’s introduction to the market. And its easy handling and acceleration time of less than 5 seconds from 0-60 mph are until now amazing accomplishments in car innovation and design.
