E39 M5 Exhaust
Of course at its most basic function, an exhaust system is designed to direct burnt gases away from a controlled combustion inside an engine. It includes one or more exhaust pipes. Depending on the overall system design, the exhaust gas may flow through one or more of the cylinder heads and then leave through the exhaust manifold.
In some cases (such as the new twin turbo BMW engine), it then goes through a turbocharger to increase the engine power. The burnt gases are also allowed to pass through a catalytic converter to reduce air pollution. A muffler or resonator is further included in the system to reduce noise.

And it can be made to look powerful too. It is believed that the real V8 sound can be heard after this mod. Ideally, the sound should not be too loud inside the car but just right. Outside the car, the sound should be just fantastic. A deep and throaty yet highly refined sound is desired. A drone at any RPM should also be avoided. These are the reasons why car owners modify their exhausts.
